In 2011, an EF5 tornado caused significant damage to Joplin, Missouri, resulting in 158 fatalities and nearly $3 billion in damages. CJD Engineering, LLC was later tasked with designing MEP Systems for the new library that would serve the community.

The new library boasts a spacious central lobby that functions as a gathering space for the community. On either side of the lobby, there are two exterior courtyards – one enclosed and the other open to the public, featuring an outdoor learning classroom and sculpture lawn. Additionally, the library design includes a community room that doubles as a storm shelter and other meeting and community spaces located in central areas.
